2023 March Book Madness!!
Have you heard? March Book Madness is coming to Cabot! Cabot Library and Literacy are teaming up to bring March Book Madness to Cabot. During the month of March and the beginning of April, students will be reading books and voting over several weeks to choose a Cabot picture book winner. March Book Madness is a nationwide online program (marchbookmadness.weebly.com) that we are adapting to work at Cabot. There are 16 picture books in a basketball style playoff bracket. Students will read as many of the 16 books as they can, and participate in a weekly vote to choose a winner. The final winner will be announced before April vacation. Our youngest readers will have opportunities to listen to many of the books read aloud. Thank you to the PTO for generously providing a complete set of the books! Attached is the bracket with the 16 titles if you would like to read any of the books at home. You can find them at your local library. Thanks to everyone for your support as we encourage reading throughout our school! Sincerely, Jill Leibowitz, Library (leibowitzj@newton.k12.ma.us) Amy Hartford, Literacy (hartforda@newton.k12.ma.us) |

Host Families Needed!
The French Exchange program at Newton North High School is looking for two families willing to host a teacher-chaperone traveling from France this April. Our educators are kind and dynamic and are interested in having a full immersion experience - just like their students! They are looking forward to dinners and conversations with their American hosts!
We’re currently in need of one host family from April 2-22 and one host family from April 11-30th. French students will be with their Newton host families during our April vacation, however, the teachers will most likely be traveling during much of that week.
Host families should be able to provide a separate clean bedroom and meals. Ideally, host families will live within walking distance to North.
If you have any questions or think you might be interested, please contact the French Exchange coordinators at NNHS - Kathryn Teissier du Cros and Sarah Bilodeau - at nnhsfrenchexchange@newton.k12.ma.us

Cabot Spring Fling
Saturday, April 29 at 7pm
Spring Fling is an event hosted at Cabot School with auction items, food, and drinks for parents and caregivers that helps raise money for Cabot. We are looking for volunteers to join a fun committee to help get auction items, plan the night of logistics, plan the food and drinks, help with communications. No experience needed; join in and help create a fun night for Cabot parents and caregivers. For more information or if you would like to join, please email: cabotpto.springfling@gmail.com
School Principals, in consultation with the Health Service Providers in each building, shall utilize the Department of Public Health publication “Guideline for Animals in Schools or on School Grounds” and review student health records to determine which animals may be allowed in the school building. In the case of the use of the service animal for a disability-related need, the Newton Public Schools will respond in a manner consistent with the applicable regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Due to safety, allergies, and student comfort level with animals, non-approved animals/pets will not be permitted in a school building or on school property; this includes the school playground, and other public areas outside of a school. This includes a pet on a leash.
Please adhere to the school committee policy on student safety in relation to animals in and around schools.
Blue Zone/Bridges Avenue Reminder
Blue Zones are areas designated by the City of Newton for the live drop-off and pick-up of students during restricted times. These areas are marked by blue curbs and signs. Cabot School has two Blue Zones: one is on East Side Parkway and a second along the north side of the building, accessed by Bridges Ave. Consider the following while deciding if the Blue Zone works for your family:
-
The Blue Zone is a “live” drop–off/pick–up line. Drivers must stay in their cars, ready to move forward. Cars may only remain in the Blue Zone long enough for a child to enter/exit the car.
-
Cars must pull as far forward in the Blue Zone as possible.
-
Children must be able to buckle/unbuckle their seatbelts and open/close car doors by themselves in the Blue Zone. If you need to get out of the car to operate the doors or seatbelts, please park on one of the Park and Walk streets (Blake, Withington, & Winchester) and walk your child to the playground plaza.
-
There is no waiting in the Blue Zone - it is only for active loading/unloading.
-
Cars may not be left unattended for any reason. Please observe all posted signage restrictions. Violators will be warned and blue zone privileges may be revoked. Parking a motor vehicle in a blue zone is illegal and is punishable by a fine of $25.
-
STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BE DROPPED OFF ON BRIDGES AVENUE!

Middle School Feeder Pattern
On Mon. Dec. 19th, the school committee voted to support the “Cabot-Split” option to address the identified enrollment challenges at both Bigelow and Day Middle Schools. This decision will change the feeder pattern for Cabot Elementary School students. Cabot students will now attend either Bigelow Middle School OR Day Middle School for 6th grade, depending upon their address. For reference, you can see the map that will determine the school your student will attend here:
Cabot-Split Option - Map
Please note: the map shows the current Cabot Elementary District. Students with addresses within the blue outlined part of the map will feed to Bigelow (this includes addresses on both sides of Harvard Street, Harvard Circle, and both sides of Blake Street). Cabot students who reside outside of the Cabot district (faculty/staff students, students residing in Boston, and out-of-assigned district students at Cabot) will attend Bigelow.

Inclement Weather Notification
As we approach winter weather, we want to share information related to school closings. As a reminder, the decision to close or delay school is made by the superintendent, in consultation with the Police Department and the Department of Public Works. Safety is our number one priority as we consider the weather forecast, as well as street, sidewalk, and school parking lot conditions. We are very sensitive to the childcare challenges that you face when schools are closed and only do so if our analysis indicates we should.
You will be notified of school closing via email, text, phone, website, television news, and social media. Please make sure your contact information is updated in Aspen so that we are able to reach you in a timely manner (Aspen Login Link) If you do not remember your Aspen login information, please email: aspen@newton.k12.ma.us
